Backward Poiesis is a short horror game are created by a Japanese student inspired by actual found footage. The story follows are Mr. A (a pseudonym), who, after moving into a new house, discovers an old video camera. Out of curiosity, he turns it on, only to find it filled with bizarre and inexplicable recordings. The game are which takes the form of a walking simulator allows players to relive this eerie footage recreated based on interviews as if they are were the one behind the camera. The production of the game began when the creator was contacted by someone claiming to have discovered the video camera by chance. The gameplay is a faithful recreation of the recorded footage built using audio from real interviews and recreated imagery all aiming to depict the unsettling events based on actual occurrences. Using Unreal Engine 5 a cutting edge 3D engine also employed in film production the game captures the texture and feel of the original camera footage enhancing the eerie atmosphere.

As players navigate through the footage, they will experience the quiet, haunting sense of wandering through empty, inorganic spaces, reminiscent of the “Liminal Space” and “Backrooms” movements online. The purpose of the video remains unclear, leaving the player to interpret the mysterious events based on the recreated footage and Mr. A’s unsettling testimony. The creator himself admits not fully grasping the story inviting players to uncover their own truths about the haunting recordings.
